A recent poll conducted by Deltapoll reveals that a significant number of Britons are concerned about the impact of Donald Trump’s second term on the UK. The survey found that only one in five people believe Trump’s re-election will benefit the UK. In contrast, a majority of respondents, nearly half, expressed a desire for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to adopt a more critical stance towards the US President.
Despite Prime Minister Starmer’s previous positive interactions with Trump, including lavish gifts and praise, the public sentiment leans towards a more cautious approach. The poll indicated that 43% of participants anticipate negative consequences for the UK during Trump’s second term, while only 20% foresee positive outcomes. Additionally, 27% believe there will be no significant change.
The call for Starmer to be more assertive towards Trump has been growing, especially following recent events such as Trump’s threats to sue the BBC and his potential support for far-right candidates in European elections. During a recent Prime Minister’s Questions session, opposition leader Sir Ed Davey urged Starmer to denounce any attempts by Trump to interfere with the UK’s democracy.
In response, Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values and emphasized the importance of unity behind European countries like Ukraine. The survey, conducted online with 1,997 British adults, indicates a strong sentiment among the public regarding the need for a more critical approach towards Trump’s policies and actions.
