A finalist from the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing narrowly escaped a potentially fatal car accident. John Whaite, a winner of the Great British Bake Off who made it to the 2021 dance show final, shared on Instagram the harrowing details of the incident that occurred the night before.
In a post on Wednesday (7 January), John disclosed that he was hit by a car, causing damage to the vehicle and injuring himself. He recounted how a kind stranger came to his aid, wrapping him in a coat until help arrived.
Doctors informed John that his muscular build likely saved his life, as they mentioned that the accident could have had fatal consequences if he wasn’t as robust. Emphasizing the importance of physical strength, John advised others to focus on building muscle and core stability while being cautious on the road, especially in low-light situations.
Assuring his followers of his well-being, John updated them that he had undergone medical checks and was in good condition, adding a touch of humor by mentioning his unchanged sexual orientation. He later clarified his use of the term “speeding,” explaining that it was meant figuratively to describe the sudden and shocking nature of the event.
Notably, John made headlines by participating in the 19th season of Strictly Come Dancing as part of the show’s first male same-sex couple, partnered with professional dancer Johannes Radebe. Despite their impressive performance, they finished as runners-up to another pair on the show.
Prior to his dance stint, John gained fame on the Great British Bake Off in 2012, where he emerged as the champion despite facing a significant finger injury during the competition. Outside of television, John remains active in baking and resides in Leeds with his spouse, Paul Atkins, whom he married in New York after a decade-long engagement.
In an interview with Gay Times, John expressed pride in his enduring relationship with his husband, highlighting it as a significant achievement in his life.
