The Met Office has issued a warning that significant snowfall of up to eight inches is expected in various parts of the country in the next few days.
An intense low-pressure system, named Storm Goretti by Meteo France, is anticipated to cause disruptions in travel, power outages, and isolation of rural communities on Thursday and Friday. Due to the severe weather conditions, numerous schools have been shut, with no immediate plans to reopen until Monday.
Temperatures plummeted to -12.5C in Marham, Norfolk, and -11C in the Scottish Highlands on Monday. The Met Office has issued weather warnings daily until Saturday, particularly for the Midlands, where areas like Worcestershire and Warwickshire are expected to receive significant snow accumulation by Friday midday.
Certain rural communities in these regions might face isolation, and parts of southwest Wales, such as the South Wales Valleys, could encounter challenges due to heavy snowfall. The storm is projected to move eastward overnight on Thursday.
The snowfall is expected to intensify in the early hours of Friday, with Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and Warwickshire likely to experience the heaviest snow, while areas further north, including parts of North Yorkshire, may also see snowfall.
Storm Goretti is forecasted to move further east, impacting the East Midlands and East of England by Friday’s rush hour. Northamptonshire, for instance, could receive around six inches of snow by Friday afternoon.
Jason Kelly, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, mentioned, “Another round of snow is expected to move eastward across central and northern Scotland today. Amber warnings are in effect until 7 pm this evening.
“Elsewhere, snow showers mixed with rain and sleet will persist, along with very cold temperatures and increasing winds. Overnight, cold air will return, resulting in temperatures dropping below freezing again. Consequently, there is a risk of further ice formation overnight, prompting new yellow weather warnings for ice across most of the UK until Wednesday morning.”
Cold Arctic air continues to linger over the UK, with Friday’s temperatures feeling as low as -12C, despite the actual air temperature being slightly warmer. However, earlier in the week, temperatures dipped to -12.5C in Marham, Norfolk.
