President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of scheduled talks with Iranian officials today and has assured protesters that assistance is forthcoming. The details of the aid were not disclosed, but this development follows Trump’s recent assertion that Iran expressed a willingness to engage in negotiations with the United States subsequent to his threat of military action against the Islamic Republic, which reportedly resulted in over 2,000 casualties according to human rights organizations.
In a morning social media post, Trump, aged 79, encouraged demonstrators to persist with their protests while cautioning perpetrators of violence and abuse that they would face significant repercussions. He declared, “Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY.”
Trump has consistently warned Tehran of potential military intervention if evidence surfaced that the Iranian government was employing lethal force against anti-government protesters. Despite these threats, the White House indicated on Monday that there might be room for diplomatic resolution. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt conveyed that the public statements from Iran differed from private communications received by the administration, hinting at potential dialogue.
The president also mentioned imposing 25% tariffs on nations conducting business with Iran, effective immediately, without providing specific details on the implementation. Among the countries engaged in economic ties with Tehran are China, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Brazil, and Russia.
Meanwhile, American citizens have been advised to evacuate Iran due to escalating protests that may spiral into violence, leading to arrests and injuries. The US Virtual Embassy for Iran warned of heightened security measures, road closures, disruptions in public transportation, and internet blockades within the country. It emphasized the necessity for US citizens to leave Iran promptly and independently, recommending preparedness for potential contingencies and maintaining low profiles.
The advisory also stressed the importance of staying informed through local media updates, adjusting plans accordingly, keeping communication devices charged, and enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time security notifications regarding the situation in Iran.
