Smith, known as ‘The Judge’, had a successful career, playing 62 Tests for his country and scoring over 4,000 runs with nine centuries. Despite battling health issues including alcoholism and depression, Smith continued to contribute to Hampshire until his retirement in 2003. His struggles with alcohol and mental health were well-documented, with Smith acknowledging the challenges he faced in interviews. Smith’s passing marks the loss of a cricketing legend who will be remembered for his talent and resilience on and off the field.
