Several prominent snooker players, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their views on a rule they believe should be changed in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, top professionals in the game were asked about a potential alteration to snooker rules, with one particular regulation repeatedly highlighted.

Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, alongside other players, has advocated for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has proven to be a point of contention among elite players. The current rule penalizes players if they fail to make contact with the designated ball, leading to a foul and a miss call by the referee.

The ‘miss’ ruling typically occurs when the referee perceives that a player attempted a more challenging shot instead of opting for an easier escape from a snooker situation. It can also be invoked if a player underperforms or lacks effort in executing a shot.

Following a ‘foul and a miss’ declaration, the opponent of the offending player can choose to reset the balls for a retake or leave them as is on the table. Continual ‘foul and a miss’ calls may result in the player repeatedly attempting the same shot while conceding points to their opponent.

Moreover, the ‘three-miss rule’ stipulates that a player who fails to hit the correct ball three consecutive times automatically forfeits the frame to their adversary. This regulation has sparked debate within the sport, with critics highlighting concerns about its inconsistent enforcement, potential to prolong games, and create confusion for casual viewers.

When asked about potential game modifications, O’Sullivan promptly singled out the ‘miss rule,’ advocating for a limit of three misses. Wilson echoed this sentiment, suggesting a cap on the number of misses allowed.

Selby also weighed in on the issue, proposing a restriction where a player can only miss three times before consequences apply. He emphasized instances where players secure victories due to opponents missing shots repeatedly despite being ahead in points.

Former world champion Murphy expressed dissatisfaction with how the ‘miss’ rule can be exploited, particularly in allowing deliberate fouls. He recommended revisiting the ‘foul and a miss’ regulation to prevent such strategic maneuvers.

Furthermore, current world number three Neil Robertson proposed a potential change where failing to make contact with a red ball results in the opponent receiving a free ball, aimed at expediting gameplay.

Apart from revising the miss rule, players also scrutinized the conventional dress code in snooker competitions. Many players advocate for a relaxation of the current requirement for long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear, suggesting a more flexible approach to attire regulations in the sport.

In response to the same query posed to his peers, Mark Allen highlighted the need for a more relaxed dress code in snooker tournaments. Luca Brecel also emphasized the importance of revisiting the dress code, introducing a shot clock, and enforcing a rule where players must always hit a cushion during play.
