England has been placed in the same pool as Wales for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with a strategic avoidance of facing world champions South Africa until the final match.

In this newly expanded tournament including a Round of 16 for the first time, England managed to bypass confronting one of the top third-place teams. Instead, they are set to compete against the runner-up of Pool B in the knockout stages if they secure the top position in Pool F, which they are expected to do.

If Steve Borthwick’s team successfully navigates through a challenging pool comprising Wales, Tonga, and Zimbabwe, their likely opponent in the next round will be Italy, who is in Pool B with the reigning world champions, South Africa.

Moving forward, England is likely to encounter Australia in the quarter-finals, as the hosts are anticipated to finish second in their pool, setting up a potential showdown with Japan in the following stage.

Should England advance past Australia, they could potentially face Argentina or Ireland in the semi-finals. Notably, powerhouses like New Zealand, South Africa, and France are situated on the opposite side of the knockout bracket, meaning England would only have to contend with one of them if they aim to secure the championship. An intriguing prospect of an All Blacks-Springboks quarter-final looms if both teams maintain their winning momentum.

England’s recent autumn performances, culminating in an impressive 11-match winning streak, have solidified their reputation as serious contenders under Borthwick’s leadership. Their significant victory against the All Blacks has bolstered their credentials and sparked discussions about their potential to claim the title.

Reflecting on history, the last time the Rugby World Cup was held in Australia, England emerged victorious under Sir Clive Woodward, making them the sole Northern Hemisphere nation to lift the William Webb Ellis trophy.
