With only a week left until Microsoft discontinues free support for Windows 10, users of Windows-powered PCs are urged to take action. After October 14, devices running Windows 10 will be vulnerable to bugs and cyber threats as Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or critical patches for the operating system.
According to consumer advocates at Which?, an estimated 21 million people in the UK still use Windows 10 on their laptops or computers. Shockingly, a quarter of Windows 10 users (26%) plan to continue using the outdated system even after support ends.
Which? warns that unsupported software like Windows 10 becomes a prime target for hackers looking to exploit vulnerabilities and steal data. Users are advised to upgrade to Windows 11 or consider enrolling in Extended Security Updates to protect their devices for the next three years.
Lisa Barber, Editor of Which? Tech, emphasized the importance of taking action now to safeguard against potential security risks. Users are encouraged to check their operating system version and make necessary upgrades to avoid falling victim to cyber threats and scams.
For those eligible, upgrading to Windows 11 is currently free and straightforward. Alternatively, users can opt for a one-year extension of Windows 10 through Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program. This extension requires users to actively enroll and can provide time to explore long-term solutions such as transitioning to a different operating system or purchasing a new device running Windows 11.
To secure the one-year extension, users must agree to back up their Windows settings to OneDrive or use Microsoft loyalty points. Those ready to switch to a new device are advised to consider the disposal or recycling of their old PCs responsibly.
