A recent disclosure shed light on the candid opinions of the pioneering judge who investigated the ban on LGBTQ+ individuals in the British armed forces. The late Lord Etherton’s insights were shared by actor and peer Michael Cashman during a lecture at the Imperial War Museum.
Lord Etherton’s report uncovered instances of “institutional homophobia” and disturbing revelations surrounding the ban that persisted until 2000. He highlighted a culture of discrimination, harassment, blackmail, sexual assaults, and unjust procedures affecting the mental health, well-being, and livelihoods of LGBTQ+ individuals within the armed forces.
The lecture also criticized the Ministry of Defence and senior ranks for perpetuating a climate that enabled abusive investigations by the Special Investigations Branch. Concerns persist about delays in compensating those impacted by the ban, with over 1,300 individuals seeking financial reparations.
Despite the high number of applications, only a fraction have been processed, leading to frustration among applicants awaiting discharge and impact payments. Lord Cashman, known for his groundbreaking same-sex kiss portrayal on Eastenders, delivered the lecture at an event organized by actor Russell Tovey, with Lord Etherton’s spouse in attendance.
Peter Gibson, CEO of Fighting With Pride, emphasized the urgency of compensating veterans who suffered under the discriminatory policy. The organization is assisting veterans in navigating the claims process and appealing rejections, urging individuals to seek support to secure justice.
Gibson stressed the importance of honoring Lord Etherton’s legacy by promptly addressing the outstanding reparations owed to those affected. The Ministry of Defence is called upon to fulfill its commitment to rectify the injustices of the past and expedite compensation for LGBTQ+ veterans.
