Kindle users were recently alerted to the upcoming restriction on new book access for their e-readers. The deadline is now just a day away, set to be enforced starting May 20, 2026. This update specifically impacts older models like the Kindle 5 and the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, preventing the addition or reading of new content.

If you are concerned about your device being affected by this Amazon update, here is a comprehensive list of the models that will no longer have access to the book store as of this week:

– Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
– Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
– Kindle Keyboard (2010)
– Kindle 4 (2011)
– Kindle Touch (2011)
– Kindle 5 (2012)
– Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

Existing book libraries will remain accessible for owners of these devices, but after the deadline passes, these Kindles will essentially become read-only devices.

According to Amazon, starting May 20, 2026, users with Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store. These models have been supported for at least 14 years, with some even up to 18 years, but technological advancements have rendered them incompatible moving forward.

While this may be disappointing news for those with older Kindles, Amazon is offering a silver lining by providing affected customers with a 20 percent discount on selected new Kindle models and a £15 eBook credit. There is a wide selection of new Kindles available, including standard models and Colorsoft devices with color screens. For those seeking additional features beyond book access, the Scribe range is worth exploring, offering digital pens for note-taking, document annotation, and book markup.
