Photographers in the Arctic Circle were amazed when their cameras captured the unexpected arrival of some special visitors. Terry Noah and his team, lying on the ice near Eureka – a research base on Ellesmere Island, shared their enchanting encounter on TikTok, drawing in a massive audience of 24 million viewers. The video showcased the photographers positioned low on the ice as a magnificent white Arctic wolf approached, followed by another wolf. The wolves calmly inspected the photographers while they joyfully snapped photos from close range.
One of the wolves briefly lay beside them before both creatures continued on their way without disturbance. Terry, the owner of Ausuittuq Adventures, described it as one of his most memorable experiences, noting the calm demeanor of the Arctic wolf that made him feel like he could even pet it. He shared how he observed the wolves waiting near a seal hole by an iceberg and attempting, unsuccessfully, to catch a sunbathing seal. Later, they found a seal carcass, feeding and resting before resuming their day.
Responding to the TikTok video, viewers marveled at the behavior of the wolves. One person pointed out how the alpha wolf marked its scent on the ice as a memory of the encounter, showcasing the intelligence of these animals. Others expressed surprise at the friendliness displayed by the Arctic wolves, contrary to popular belief that they are not welcoming creatures.
According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Arctic wolves are nocturnal pack animals led by an alpha male, known for hunting together and communicating through howling. IFAW highlighted that Arctic wolves exhibit distinctive behaviors due to their extreme habitat and are observed as playful and unafraid of humans. Unlike other wolf species facing human threats, Arctic wolves have not experienced historical conflicts with humans due to their remote environment. However, the impact of climate change and industrialization in the Arctic poses a threat to the future of Arctic wolves and their habitat.
