A former nurse convicted of killing babies, Lucy Letby, has secured a new role in prison that is a stark departure from her previous career and could enhance her popularity among inmates. Letby transitioned from a cleaning job at HMP Bronzefield to a more comfortable position as a librarian, where she will distribute books to other prisoners. This move has stirred jealousy among fellow inmates at the women-only prison, with Letby seemingly thrilled about her new responsibilities.
Celebrating her 36th birthday last week, Letby is serving 15 whole-life orders and is currently situated in Unit 4, a section reserved for enhanced prisoners, at the Surrey facility. Sources suggest that this new role could facilitate Letby’s acceptance within the prison community.
As the librarian on her unit, Letby has the opportunity to cater to her friends’ preferences, such as delivering entertainment box sets to cells. Her upgraded status to an enhanced prisoner shortly after her sentencing allowed her to take on this role and receive double the standard allowance for weekly visits.
Letby, who received 15 whole-life sentences for murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others while working at a hospital, celebrated her recent birthday behind bars. Despite receiving letters from admirers during her imprisonment, her barrister noted that such correspondence serves as a harsh reminder of her incarceration and birthdays spent in confinement.
Mark McDonald, Letby’s barrister, expressed that while she receives letters and cards from well-wishers, these gestures also underscore the reality of her imprisonment and the solitude experienced during significant events like birthdays.
