The owner of a bar in Switzerland, where 40 individuals tragically lost their lives in a fire, is being investigated for allegedly escaping the premises with a cash register filled with money. Jessica Moretti, aged 40, reportedly disregarded the safety concerns of patrons and left with cash as the fire engulfed the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana. She co-owns the bar with her husband, Jacques Moretti, aged 49.
The couple is facing accusations of negligence leading to bodily harm, negligent homicide, and negligent arson. Additionally, Jessica Moretti, a French national, may also be charged with failure to assist individuals in peril. Numerous reports have highlighted that Ms. Moretti fled the scene while trapped patrons cried out for help. Security cameras allegedly captured her leaving with the cash register as the fire raged on New Year’s Day.
According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, Ms. Moretti was seen prioritizing the cash register containing the day’s earnings as she made her escape. CCTV footage purportedly shows her leaving the location with the cash register filled with cash. The fire, initiated by candle sparklers held too close to the ceiling, stands as one of the deadliest incidents in Swiss history, resulting in tributes for the victims.
Authorities indicate that 119 individuals sustained injuries in the fire due to the rapid spread of flames through combustible materials. The deceased individuals ranged in age from 14 to 39, including Charlotte Niddam, who was educated in Britain. Families of the victims have lodged a legal complaint with the Swiss prosecutor’s office.
A Geneva-based lawyer, Romain Jordan, confirmed that each family has filed a complaint and joined the legal proceedings as plaintiffs. He mentioned that the complaints have been acknowledged. Following the tragic incident, Ms. Moretti and her husband were accused of blocking social media accounts, with the bar suspending its profiles during the rescue operations.
Authorities are now probing renovation work conducted in 2015 amid allegations of inadequate safety measures. The investigation will extend to the use of fire extinguishers and fire exits on the premises.
