Barry Hearn has criticized Conor Benn for his “lacking in class” departure from Matchroom to join Zuffa Boxing, seemingly ignoring any communication attempts from Eddie Hearn.
The 29-year-old announced the split, opting to be managed by the Saudi-backed promoter led by UFC president Dana White. Benn chose to leave the promoters who had supported him for a decade, including during a past failed drug test. Eddie Hearn had high praise for Benn after his victory over Chris Eubank Jnr last year.
Benn stated that Zuffa had offered him an opportunity he couldn’t resist, disregarding Eddie Hearn’s efforts to discuss their partnership, which disappointed Hearn Sr.
Eddie expressed his disappointment, stating, “Perhaps we misjudged Conor. We supported him, believed in him, and now this. It’s more than just money. He received a significant offer from Dana White, backed by Turki Alalshikh’s funds.”
Benn is the latest high-profile addition to Zuffa, following Jai Opetaia. Eddie Hearn had highlighted upcoming opportunities after Benn’s win over Eubank Jnr, but they will no longer be under his guidance.
Barry revealed that Conor declined a meeting suggested by Eddie, opting for lawyers instead, describing the situation as the most appalling in his extensive career.
Despite being the mandatory challenger for the WBC welterweight title, Benn asserted that rejecting the lucrative offer would have been foolish.
Hearn Sr. emphasized that he wouldn’t have objected to Benn exploring other options if it had been handled differently. “We have high standards, but they haven’t been reciprocated,” he added.
