BBC Radio Pioneer Jenny Collins Mourned

A pioneering figure in BBC radio, Jenny Collins from Liverpool, passed away at the age of 83, sparking an outpouring of tributes from her former colleagues and friends. Collins played a key role in establishing the Merseyside radio service in 1967, which became the third local BBC radio station at the time.

Starting her career as a reporter and on-air presenter, Collins engaged with listeners and hosted Junior Spin before progressing to senior editorial positions like programme controller. Her former colleague Roy Corlett praised her posthumously for her significant contributions, noting that she helped shape the station that continues to thrive almost six decades later.

Roger Lyon, another former Radio Merseyside presenter, shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, describing Collins as a delightful individual with a remarkable broadcasting voice. Lyon reminisced about their interactions, illustrating Collins’ dedication to her work over the years.

Collins’ late husband, Steve Voce, who passed away in November 2023, also left a mark on BBC Radio Merseyside. Voce, a former member of the station, had a notable career at BBC Radio 2 and as a music reviewer, known for his lively and insightful reviews. His contributions were highly valued by jazz enthusiasts and readers of Jazz Journal.

The legacy left by Jenny Collins and Steve Voce continues to be celebrated by their peers and admirers, highlighting their enduring impact on the broadcasting industry.
