The global attention-grabbing avian romance has sadly concluded its chapter. Jackie, one part of the famous bald eagle duo whose existence and challenges as parents captivated millions of viewers through a live stream camera in Big Bear Valley, Southern California, passed away on Monday after extensive veterinary care.
The Ojai Raptor Center, where Jackie was under treatment, made the announcement of her demise on Instagram, stating that despite intensive efforts from the veterinary team and specialists, Jackie’s health deteriorated leading to her passing at the age of 14.
The news of Jackie’s demise has triggered an outpouring of affection from fans who have followed her journey closely. Many expressed their deep sadness and gratitude for the opportunity to witness Jackie and her partner, Shadow, nurture their chicks through the live stream camera operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV).
Jackie, believed to be the first eaglet hatched in Big Bear Valley in 2012, became a familiar figure to the public in 2017 when she and her former mate, Mr. B, settled near the first camera. Subsequently, Shadow emerged as a contender for Jackie’s affection, succeeded in winning her over, and together, they became the stars of their own avian reality show.
Despite Jackie’s absence from the nest cameras, her legacy endures. FOBBV recently announced the successful fundraising of $10 million US to preserve the 63 acres of forest and shoreline where Jackie and Shadow resided, thwarting a proposed luxury housing development. This achievement was made possible by the generous contributions of more than 25,000 fans worldwide.
As FOBBV continues to provide updates on the other eagles in the region, the final offspring of Jackie and Shadow, Sandy and Luna, were last observed on camera on July 23, embarking on their independent journeys. While Shadow remained steadfast in his loyalty to their nest and territory, a new female eagle, KD-1, has been spotted near the nest, hinting at the possibility of new beginnings post Jackie’s departure.
