A Braintree couple, Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, have successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to £40 by participating in a pioneering energy program trial. They have replaced their gas boiler with a unique system consisting of over 500 computer banks stored in their shed. This innovative setup generates heat that is efficiently channeled into their hot water system.

Previously, the Bridges were spending £375 each month to heat their two-bedroom bungalow. Since installing the data center in December 2024, their heating bills have decreased significantly to a range of £40 to £70 per month. Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at being able to comfortably manage their heating expenses without financial stress.

The HeatHub data center, developed by Thermify, is part of the UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, which aims to assist low-income households in transitioning to a more sustainable lifestyle. The Bridges also had solar panels installed on their roof as part of this initiative.

Speaking about the innovative system, Mr. Bridges highlighted the efficiency of the setup and the noteworthy benefits it has brought to their home. The technology not only ensures consistent warmth throughout the bungalow but also eliminates cold spots, providing a comfortable living environment.

Travis Theune, CEO of Thermify, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering clean and cost-effective energy solutions to combat fuel poverty in the UK. The project has demonstrated promising results in reducing carbon emissions and lowering heating expenses, prompting plans to expand the initiative to more households in the future.

Daniel Greenwood, from Eastlight Community Homes, praised the collaboration with SHIELD partners in implementing the heat hub installation, emphasizing the positive impact on residents’ quality of life. The successful trial in the Bridges’ home signifies a step towards achieving energy efficiency goals and enhancing living standards through innovative technology applications.

Jack McKellar, the innovation program manager at UK Power Networks, underscored the importance of inclusive access to sustainable technologies for all households, particularly those facing economic challenges. The SHIELD project aims to scale up its impact, aiming to benefit a larger number of households as part of the UK’s sustainable energy transition.
