The Winter Olympics kick off with a grand ceremony at Milan’s renowned San Siro Stadium, featuring performances by Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. The British team is filled with promising young athletes, with UK Sport anticipating a potential medal haul of up to eight in Italy. Spread across northern Italy, the 25th winter games will host events in Predazzo, Livigno, and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Team GB is expected to achieve its best-ever medal count, aiming to surpass the previous records set at the Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 games.

Ice skating duo Lewis Gibson and Lilah Fear, likened to the legendary Torvill and Dean, could secure the nation’s first Olympic figure skating medal since 1994 after their impressive third-place finish at the world championships last year. The opening ceremony will see Lilah Fear, 26, carrying the flag alongside bobsleigh pilot Brad Hall.

British curlers are poised to build on their success from 2022, particularly the women who clinched gold. Notable athletes like world champion Matt Weston and his teammate Marcus Wyatt are leading the charge in skeleton events. Other strong contenders for medals include Mia Brookes, Kirsty Muir, Zoe Atkin, and Charlotte Bankes, offering Team GB a chance at securing its first Olympic gold or silver on snowy terrains.

The Winter Olympics, running until Feb 22 with coverage on the BBC, will witness nearly 3,000 athletes from 90 countries vying for 116 medals at Milan-Cortina. Team GB boasts 53 athletes, with Marcus Wyatt favored to join Weston on the men’s skeleton podium. The competition will showcase a range of events, including the mixed team competition featuring Weston and Tabby Stoecker, as well as Brad Hall’s participation in the men’s bobsleigh events.

Expectations are high for Team GB’s curlers, with potential medal prospects in various events. The lineup includes Mouat and Jennifer Dodds teaming up in the mixed team event, with Team Morrison aiming to defend the gold won in Beijing four years ago. Matt Weston, a decorated skeleton athlete, has an impressive track record, having secured multiple world titles and World Cup victories.

Several key athletes to watch during the competition include Zoe Atkin in freestyle skiing, Charlotte Bankes in snowboarding, Mia Brookes in snowboarding, Kirsty Muir in freestyle skiing, and Lilah Fear & Lewis Gibson in figure skating. These athletes have demonstrated exceptional skills and successes in their respective disciplines, raising hopes for significant achievements at the Winter Olympics.
