Parts of British Columbia have been facing severe drought this summer, leading to water restrictions in Bessette Creek to safeguard salmon populations from low river flows. Temporary protection orders were also implemented for the Salmon River watershed due to increased wildfire risks. Bob Crandall, the treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society, mentioned that streams connected to Lake Cowichan are progressively drying up, prompting them to conduct fry salvage operations to relocate fish to other water bodies.
Crandall emphasized the importance of human intervention to mitigate the ecological challenges caused by human activities. Despite the communities in B.C. supporting these initiatives, scientists caution that this may not be a sustainable long-term solution. Crandall, along with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, actively engage in relocating fish species like salmon, trout, and char to areas with more water, although the changing climate poses challenges.
Efforts to move fish are becoming more strenuous as streams dry up farther upstream, requiring advanced equipment like aerators and bubblers to ensure fish survival during transportation. The partnership with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation has been instrumental in these endeavors, utilizing drones to monitor drying streams. Michelle Corfield highlighted the Nation’s commitment to salmon conservation, emphasizing a holistic approach to protect the species for future generations.
Similar challenges are being faced globally, with France experiencing extreme drought conditions affecting fish relocation efforts. Jean-Pierre Faure from the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône stated that climate change has intensified the situation, leading to unprecedented heatwaves and impacting the ecosystem. Faure stressed the necessity of ecosystem restoration and water management over short-term interventions like fish relocation due to the limitations and costs associated with such efforts.
