A 24-year-old man has admitted guilt in the savage killing of his pregnant sister and her unborn child, shedding light on his disturbing motives through diary entries.
Jack Ball confessed to the murder of 30-year-old Bethany Ann Israel and her unborn baby, followed by the dismemberment of the expectant mother’s body. The tragic incident unfolded when the siblings’ mother contacted the authorities on May 23, 2024, suspecting her daughter met a grim fate at her brother’s residence. Bethany, who was 17 to 18 weeks pregnant, and her unborn child were determined to be victims of the heinous crime by a medical examiner.
Bethany had visited her brother for dinner, but concerns arose when she failed to make contact for hours. Upon visiting the brother’s home, their mother witnessed Ball leaving hurriedly, prompting her to enter and discover a scene of blood, leading to her call to emergency services.
Law enforcement swiftly responded to the Minnesota location, uncovering blood traces in the kitchen and a collection of bloodied tools like a saw, hatchet, and knives. Further investigation revealed dismembered body parts and a disturbing scene where a resident reported spotting a man depositing what appeared to be a body part on their doorstep through a security camera. Ball was eventually found in a neighboring yard with a self-inflicted neck injury, requiring hospital treatment.
Authorities stumbled upon several journals penned by Ball that hint at the motive behind the gruesome act. In these writings, he expressed anger towards his pregnant sister, deeming her no longer “innocent” due to her pregnancy.
Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena expressed deep concern over the case’s horrific nature, vowing to seek justice for the victims and provide support to the grieving family. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated in memory of Bethany, portraying her as a beloved wife, daughter, sister, and mother-to-be, whose kindness and love had left an enduring impact on those around her.
In January 2025, Ball, who has cited mental illness as a defense, faced charges of premeditated first-degree murder and intentional second-degree murder. He later pleaded guilty to the first and third counts, receiving a recommended life sentence from prosecutors as part of the plea agreement.
Minnesota law allows defendants to claim lack of criminal responsibility due to mental illness, and Ball, currently detained at Dakota County Jail, is set to present his defense in court. Conviction could lead to a mandatory life imprisonment term for Ball.
