At the Montreal Elite16 tournament, Canadian beach volleyball players Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson claimed the bronze medal on home turf.
The duo, who won silver at the 2024 Olympics, fought back to defeat Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann with scores of 20-22, 21-12, and 18-16, securing a spot on the podium.
Wilkerson showcased an impressive performance with 32 attack points, 5 block points, and a crucial serve point, while Humana-Paredes contributed 9 attack points.
The match had to be temporarily stopped due to inclement weather before resuming.
In the earlier semifinals, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson faced a tough defeat against Brazil’s Thamela Galil and Victoria Tosta in a 21-19, 20-22, 15-7 match.
Although they missed out on a three-peat, the Canadian pair had another chance to clinch the bronze medal against Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann later in the day.
Prior to this event, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson had previously won the Montreal titles in 2023 and 2025, with an Olympic silver medal in between at the Paris Games.
Canadian men secure bronze
Meanwhile, Canada’s Sam Schachter and Jonathan Pickett staged a remarkable comeback to secure a bronze medal in the men’s competition.
The duo from Ontario faced off against Norway’s Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen, bouncing back after losing the first set 16-21 to win the next two sets 28-26 and 15-12, earning their first podium finish together on home ground.
Schachter and Pickett caused an upset by defeating the top-ranked pair of Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson to reach the men’s semifinals at the FIVB Beach Pro Tour event.
Despite falling short in the semifinals against Brazil’s Renato Andrew Lima de Carvalho and André Loyola Stein, the Canadian team put up a strong fight in a 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 16-14) match.
