Carlos Alcaraz made history by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final to become the youngest player in the Open era to win a career Grand Slam, surpassing Rafael Nadal’s record. Despite losing the first set 6-2, Alcaraz bounced back to win the next three sets 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, clinching his first title in Melbourne.

At 22 years old, Alcaraz had previously won each of the other three Grand Slam tournaments twice but had not succeeded in Australia until now. This victory marked his revenge against Djokovic, whom he defeated in just over three hours, preventing Djokovic from claiming a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.

Alcaraz achieved this milestone at 22 years and 272 days, breaking the previous record set by Don Budge in 1938 and surpassing both Nadal and Rod Laver in age when they achieved similar feats. His win was witnessed by Nadal, who held the previous record, and Alcaraz now boasts seven Grand Slam singles titles, the youngest player to reach this milestone, surpassing Bjorn Borg’s record.

The victory also placed Alcaraz three Grand Slam titles ahead of his rival Jannik Sinner, who Djokovic defeated in the semi-finals. Djokovic, who would have become the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era, acknowledged Alcaraz’s achievement and paid tribute to his opponent and Nadal during the post-match ceremony.

The Australian Open final showcased Alcaraz’s talent and determination, solidifying his place in tennis history and setting the stage for a promising future in the sport.
