Carrie-Anne Moss found herself engrossed in a chapter featuring Baba Yaga from her treasured book when an offer came in to star in the new series, “Yaga.” The coincidence felt like fate.

During an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner, Moss revealed her long-standing ownership of “Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés since 1999. The chapter’s theme resonated with the project she was presented with.

Developed by Canadian playwright Kat Sandler, “Yaga” is a dark mystery-thriller adapted from her 2019 stage play.

Noah Reid (known for “Schitt’s Creek”) plays the role of private investigator Charlie Rapp in the series, on a quest to locate missing heir Henry Park, portrayed by Hudson Williams (“Heated Rivalry”). The storyline unfolds in the fictional coastal town of Whittock, drawing parallels to the enigmatic Slavic legend of Baba Yaga.

Sandler reached out to Moss with a compelling letter outlining her suitability for the character of Katherine Hargrove, a professor attracted to younger men. After reviewing the letter, Sandler’s pitch, and the scripts, Moss accepted the role.

Filming in Victoria has brought Moss back to her roots in British Columbia, where she spent summers as a child on the island with relatives.

Growing up in Burnaby and later residing with her mother in Granville Island during high school, Moss’ passion for acting was kindled by her solo trips to watch school plays, musicals, and performing arts groups in Vancouver.

Moss, recalling her early aspirations, credited television shows for igniting her desire to pursue acting, emphasizing the deep emotional connection she felt with the performances.

Transitioning from Vancouver to Toronto as a model before venturing to Europe, Moss landed her breakthrough role on the TV series “Dark Justice” while residing in Barcelona.

Despite facing challenges during her move to Los Angeles without financial stability or a green card, Moss persisted, driven by her genuine passion for acting rather than the pursuit of fame.

The pivotal role of Trinity in “The Matrix,” which Moss auditioned for in 1997, marked a turning point in her career. The audition process, culminating on her 30th birthday alongside Keanu Reeves, led to Moss’ iconic portrayal of Trinity.

Reflecting on her journey, including setbacks and rejections, Moss highlighted the transformative power of perseverance and trusting in the path destiny unfolds.

Immersed in martial arts training for “The Matrix,” Moss formed strong bonds with her co-stars, and the emotional impact of watching the completed film for the first time moved her to tears.

Following her international success with “The Matrix,” Moss went on to feature in various films, taking breaks from work to prioritize raising her children, a decision she holds dear.

Currently residing in New Hampshire after years in Los Angeles, Moss values the serenity of her new surroundings and aims to reconnect with nature away from the glitz of Hollywood.

Expressing reservations about artificial intelligence’s impact on creativity and storytelling, Moss emphasized the importance of human empathy and connection fostered through traditional storytelling methods.

As she navigates her career choices, Moss remains contemplative about the evolving landscape of entertainment, underscoring the spiritual essence embedded in storytelling and the values it upholds.
