Another Costa Coffee branch has closed down, joining a growing number of over a dozen branches that have shut their doors in the past year. The Costa located on Marlborough High Street in Wiltshire ceased operations last month, causing sadness among the local community.

Reports from local sources indicate that the establishment has been completely cleared out, with all Costa branding removed. Despite this, no official explanation has been given for the closure of the popular coffee shop on Marlborough High Street.

A spokesperson from Costa confirmed that the store ceased serving customers on July 17, 2025. This closure follows a warning issued to UK households regarding Nescafé coffee.

The spokesperson mentioned to the Gazette and Herald that most of the team members have been relocated to other Costa Coffee stores in nearby areas. Residents expressed their grief over the closure, with one regular customer describing it as a “terrible loss” for Marlborough, while another lamented the closure as “such a shame,” highlighting the shop’s reputation as a great coffee spot.

The challenges faced by British high streets are well-documented, with retailers struggling against online competition, high rental costs, rising wage expenses, and subdued consumer spending.

Recent figures from the British Retail Consortium-Sensormatic reveal that one in seven UK shops now sits vacant. Additionally, there has been no anticipated summer retail boost for the second consecutive year, with overall UK footfall in July decreasing by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year, and high street visits declining by 1.7 percent.

Costa Coffee, the largest coffee chain in the UK, was acquired by Coca-Cola in a £3.9 billion deal in 2019. With over 2,700 outlets in the UK and Ireland, as well as international locations, the brand has seen a decline in sales in recent years, leading to the closure of multiple branches.

The decrease in sales could also be attributed to a two-year boycott against attacks in Gaza, resulting in decreased consumer interest in brands like McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Zara.

According to The Standard, the following Costa Coffee branches have closed since September 2024.
