Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the current Saudi Pro League season may mark the end of his illustrious football career. The 41-year-old star’s contract with Al-Nassr in Riyadh, inked in December 2022, is set to expire next June, and he has suggested that he is unlikely to sign another.
In an interview with Vogue magazine, Ronaldo expressed, “This could very well be my final year in football, and I aim to leave behind a remarkable legacy.” With an impressive tally of 976 career goals, the Portuguese forward recently tied the knot with his long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez.
“I have my future plans all laid out,” Ronaldo stated. “There are numerous endeavors awaiting me, making it hard to pinpoint just one. Football’s departure may create a void, necessitating diversification of activities to occupy my time effectively.”
The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year as a professional player. His exceptional career boasts five Ballon d’Or trophies and five UEFA Champions League triumphs. Ronaldo’s stellar performance last season, scoring 28 league goals, was instrumental in Al-Nassr clinching the Saudi Arabian championship in May, marking his first title since joining the club in Riyadh and the team’s first league victory since 2019.
Upon his return from his recent nuptials, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s season opener as they kicked off their title defense with a resounding 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh. Coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s presence, affirming his continued support for the team. Looking ahead, Ronaldo may feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah.
Ronaldo’s reflections on his career coincide with Lionel Messi’s recent contemplation of retirement following his father’s passing. Messi, aged 39, expressed uncertainty about his football future, remarking, “I used to solely focus on playing football, but now I’m unsure if I will continue for much longer.”
