The Defence Secretary has pledged to put an end to the issue of substandard military housing following the completion of upgrades to 1,000 homes ahead of schedule.
John Healey has instructed an additional 250 military properties to receive priority renovations in the upcoming months, marking a 25% increase from the initial target set eight months ago. The housing improvement initiative has already enhanced nearly 700 properties in England, over 150 in Northern Ireland, more than 100 in Wales, and over 50 in Scotland.
During an exclusive interview with The Mirror at a base in Colchester, Mr. Healey emphasized that the progress made has been beneficial for morale and retention, underscoring his commitment to addressing the longstanding issue of inadequate military housing.
Mr. Healey stated, “One of the most significant scandals in recent years has been the deplorable condition of the residences provided to our service members and their families. Within six months of taking office, we reclaimed 36,000 military family homes from privatization, initiating a £9 billion investment over the next decade to upgrade or rebuild 9 out of 10 Forces family homes.”
“We have successfully met our target of revamping a thousand of the worst homes ahead of schedule, ensuring that this Christmas, more families are residing in homes suitable for Heroes,” he added.
Properties nationwide have undergone extensive improvements such as new flooring, replacement of faulty boilers and heating systems, roof repairs, and upgrades to bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and doors.
Mr. Healey highlighted that these actions not only boost morale but also contribute to retaining personnel within the armed forces. He emphasized, “The quality of housing has a direct impact on morale and retention rates within the forces, and I anticipate a positive effect on both aspects.”
Cpl Jack Crean, along with his partner Nina and their one-year-old son Charlie, recently moved into one of the newly renovated homes at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. Cpl Crean expressed their delight, stating, “We are thrilled to be in our new home for Christmas. Everyone is much happier here, especially Charlie. Living in a modern house makes a significant difference for our family, providing reassurance that they are in a clean, up-to-date environment.”
