In the serene setting of their cozy suburban residence, Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips appear to be an ordinary couple enjoying their retirement. However, their true identity as fierce advocates against animal cruelty tells a different story. For nearly half a century, they have dedicated their lives to exposing and combatting animal abuse worldwide.
Jan, 73, remains unwavering in her mission, emphasizing that there is still much work to be done. Together with her husband Tim, 64, they co-founded Animal Defenders International (ADI), a group that has been instrumental in dismantling illegal animal trafficking networks and driving bans on practices such as fur farming, animal experiments, and animal circuses across numerous countries.
Their journey began when Jan was moved to action by a scandal involving beagles forced to smoke in a laboratory research project, sparking her transition from a career in architectural design to becoming a fervent animal welfare advocate. She recounts how a single incident transformed her life, leading her to embrace a vegetarian and later vegan lifestyle despite facing skepticism and criticism from acquaintances.
Their investigative efforts, often conducted undercover, have exposed the harsh realities animals endure in circuses, farms, and laboratories. Jan and her team risked personal safety to document and reveal the appalling conditions animals were subjected to, challenging official accounts of humane treatment.
One significant breakthrough came from an investigation into UK circuses, which exposed the mistreatment of animals, including the notorious case of circus boss Mary Chipperfield’s abuse of a chimpanzee named Trudy. The subsequent legal actions against Chipperfield and others paved the way for global bans on animal circuses.
Despite the challenges and risks involved in their work, Jan and Tim remain resolute in their commitment to animal welfare. They continue to rescue animals from abusive environments, with a recent focus on saving tigers in Guatemala. Their dedication extends beyond borders, emphasizing the importance of global compassion towards animals as integral members of the ecosystem.
As they age, Jan and Tim show no signs of slowing down, reaffirming their steadfast dedication to their cause and their reluctance to retire. Their tireless efforts serve as a beacon of hope for animal welfare advocates worldwide. For more information about ADI, visit www.ad-international.org.
