Gord MacIntyre, an Edmonton soccer player, is aiming to secure a national title at the ongoing Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alta. Apart from this goal, MacIntyre is focused on experiencing fair play, competitive games, and hoping for a successful outcome as he plays as a left forward for Team Alberta.
The Summer Games, a platform for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, have finally commenced after meticulous planning spanning eight years and extensive travel by 1,700 athletes. The city of Medicine Hat aspires to showcase its warm hospitality throughout the event.
The games feature nearly 1,700 athletes participating in 10 sports, including bocce, bowling, powerlifting, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and softball. The opening ceremonies at the city’s 6,000-seat hockey arena witnessed enthusiastic crowds waving provincial flags and cheering on the athletes.
Governor General Louise Arbour, after witnessing the high level of activity, volunteerism, and sportsmanship during the event, described it as an inspiring phenomenon showcasing Canadian community spirit. Nicola Lambrechts, the chair of Special Olympics British Columbia, expressed admiration for the athletes’ exceptional performances and pride in representing their provinces.
The event in Medicine Hat has seen a significant turnout of around 1,500 local volunteers, who have warmly welcomed athletes, family members, and coaches. The city, fully booked with 13 hotels accommodating the influx of visitors, has embraced the national event wholeheartedly.
Medicine Hat, known for its hosting capabilities and volunteer culture, has strategically leveraged newer facilities and a dedicated bid and host committee. Despite facing challenges due to the pandemic, the city has successfully organized the Summer Games, utilizing various venues including a hockey arena, recreation center, and local sports facilities.
With a budget of $3.6 million funded by government grants, community contributions, and corporate donations, the event ensures seamless transportation, accommodation, meals, and organizing costs for participants. The theme of the games, “we all shine together,” resonates with the spirit of unity and inclusivity championed by Special Olympics Canada.
