EE customers are being warned about a resurgence of a fraudulent text message scam that aims to trick them into claiming non-existent “EE reward points” before they expire. The scam involves a convincing message prompting recipients to click a link that leads to a fake EE website, designed to steal personal information and money. Reports indicate a rise in such incidents recently.

In an effort to alert others, some EE users have shared their experiences on online forums. One customer mentioned receiving a deceptive text regarding rewards and emphasized the need for caution. Another admitted falling for the scam momentarily before realizing the situation and closing the fraudulent website.

Phonely, a cybersecurity firm, has observed an increase in reports on its scam-tracking platform, indicating that scammers are impersonating EE by sending messages from random numbers. The firm advises mobile users to be wary of unexpected messages related to rewards, prizes, or expiring benefits.

Bryn Thompson, Phonely’s Marketing Director, highlighted the sophistication of these scam messages, which can easily deceive unsuspecting individuals. He urged people not to click on links in unexpected texts and to verify any communication directly with their mobile provider using official contact information.

EE has clarified that it does not operate a points or rewards program and has shared an example of the fraudulent message to help customers recognize it. The company emphasized the importance of ignoring such messages, refraining from clicking on any links, and avoiding sharing personal information.

The fraudulent text typically reads as follows: “The EE points program reminds you: Since you are a high-quality user of our company, we will give you some points as a gift. The points will expire in three working days. Please click on the link below to use your points to redeem prizes in time!”

Therefore, the key advice is to disregard any messages from EE regarding reward points, refrain from clicking on links, and avoid disclosing personal details to maintain security and prevent falling victim to scams.
