AI’s influence on society is growing, posing challenges for parents trying to keep up with the rapid changes. Families are increasingly tasked with guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media to schoolwork and relationships – a topic underscored by the recent Safer Internet Day.

In 2026, we have joined forces with Tesco Mobile, a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, to promote The Family Chat initiative. This program encourages families to engage in open discussions about smartphones and online safety, aiming to alleviate the complexity of the digital world.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, will lead conversations with parents and children to address the challenges they face. The inaugural discussion will delve into the realm of AI and highlight the significance of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub in aiding parents with children up to 18 years old.

Like many families, the Karleys – consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua, Isaac, and Ruby – heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. However, the parents confess to struggling with understanding AI, which can hinder their ability to ensure online safety.

Anna candidly admits, “I’m not adept at identifying AI. There have been instances where I’ve mistaken something as real, only for my kids to point out that it’s AI.” The family acknowledges the challenges of distinguishing between real and fake content, particularly on platforms like TikTok.

In today’s digital landscape, where homework often involves AI-generated research, the Karleys and Giovanna are grappling with the implications. Giovanna remarks, “I’ve observed that my eldest’s secondary school assignments are predominantly computer-based. As parents, our focus should be on evaluating how we utilize AI for homework rather than outright condemning its use.”

To guide children in utilizing AI safely, consider the following tips:

1. Explore AI Together: Engage in collaborative AI activities to make the experience safer and more enjoyable.
2. AI Isn’t Always Accurate: Encourage children to verify information provided by AI and question its sources.
3. Check Age Restrictions and Privacy Settings: Utilize reputable platforms and review privacy settings regularly to enhance digital safety.
4. Discuss Authenticity: Educate children on discerning genuine content from deepfakes and misinformation, fostering digital literacy.
5. Use AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch: Encourage creativity and critical thinking alongside AI usage to nurture well-rounded skills.

Anna and Emmanuel appreciate having a reliable information source for guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers accessible resources and toolkits to facilitate conversations about AI safety with children, including age-appropriate tips developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre. The platform also features engaging AI quizzes to involve the whole family in discussions.

While the Karley family already prioritizes online safety discussions, the resources from Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub have further empowered them. Emmanuel remarks, “We can delve deeper into the subject together, enhancing our support for them.”
