Drivers in England now have access to interactive maps that display how well their local councils are handling potholes and road conditions. Each council in the country has been ranked using a color-coding system of red, amber, or green to indicate their performance in addressing road issues. The maps also indicate the current road conditions in different council areas using the same color scale.

Councils with the worst road conditions are marked in red, while those with the best conditions are in green. A total of 11 councils have received a red rating for their poor road conditions, while 26 councils have been rated green. The data highlights that most of the red-rated councils are located in London, with only three outside the capital, including Derbyshire, Bath and North East Somerset, and West Northamptonshire.

Additionally, separate ratings assess how effectively councils respond to potholes. These ratings provide insight into how councils in England and London are performing in maintaining their roads. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the increased funding of £7.3 billion to local authorities for road repairs, aiming to save drivers money and enhance road safety.

Various stakeholders, such as the AA president and British Cycling’s Brand and Engagement Director, have commended the government’s efforts to hold councils accountable for road maintenance. They believe that increased investment in road repairs is crucial for ensuring the safety of all road users, including cyclists. RAC Head of Policy and LCRIG Managing Director have also expressed optimism about the new ratings system, highlighting the potential for improved road maintenance practices and long-term funding to enhance the quality of local roads.
