England is set to ban the practice of boiling lobsters alive as part of efforts to enhance animal welfare. Government officials have deemed live boiling as an unacceptable method of killing crustaceans, with forthcoming guidelines to be issued. This initiative is a component of the Government’s comprehensive Animal Welfare Strategy, aimed at enhancing the well-being of pets, farm animals, and wildlife.
Countries like Switzerland, Norway, and New Zealand have already prohibited the live boiling of lobsters, with animal welfare organizations advocating for more humane methods such as stunning lobsters with electric guns or chilling them before boiling them. Ben Sturgeon, the chief executive of Crustacean Compassion, expressed support for the ban, emphasizing the unnecessary pain inflicted on conscious animals during boiling and advocating for readily available humane alternatives like electrical stunning.
Former Tory minister Zac Goldsmith also endorsed the decision, denouncing the cruelty of live boiling as brutal and unnecessary. The Tories had previously acknowledged in 2022 that invertebrates like octopus, crabs, and lobsters are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain similar to other animals.
The Animal Welfare Strategy includes various measures such as exploring the prohibition of electric shock collars for pets, addressing dog attacks on farm animals, banning caged hens, trail hunting, and snares. Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds hailed the strategy as a significant step forward in animal welfare, emphasizing the UK’s reputation as a nation of animal lovers.
The strategy also focuses on reforming dog breeding practices to end puppy farming, improving health and welfare standards for pets. Additionally, it aims to transition away from confinement systems for farm animals, implement humane slaughter practices for farmed fish, and promote the use of slower-growing chicken breeds for meat production.
Further commitments within the strategy include phasing out pig farrowing crates and addressing welfare concerns related to carbon dioxide stunning of pigs. The comprehensive plan reflects the government’s dedication to advancing animal welfare standards across various sectors.
