A shocking incident unfolded when a family was mistakenly informed of their son’s death only to later discover he was alive. The confusion arose after police reported that 17-year-old Trevor Wynn had passed away in a tragic accident in Rotherham. However, it was revealed that Trevor was actually alive and receiving treatment in a hospital. Tragically, two other teenagers did not survive the crash.
The authorities disclosed that a silver Toyota Corolla had veered off the road, resulting in the fatal collision that claimed the lives of 18-year-old Joshua Johnson and an unnamed 17-year-old girl who was driving. Initially, police believed that Joshua was the one being treated in the hospital, but they later realized the mix-up when Trevor regained consciousness and provided his identity.
Subsequent investigations and formal identification processes were initiated following new information that came to light. Trevor’s family, who had already organized a GoFundMe campaign under the assumption of his death, publicly shared the corrected news. They emphasized the challenging journey ahead for Trevor’s recovery, including medical care, rehabilitation, travel, accommodation, and other related expenses.
The unexpected turn of events led to the cancellation of Trevor’s funeral, which was scheduled to take place. Meanwhile, arrests were made in connection with the incident, with an 18-year-old held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a 19-year-old on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, both awaiting further inquiries.
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane acknowledged the distress caused by the situation and assured support for Trevor and all affected families. He announced the police’s decision to involve the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to investigate their role in the identification process post-collision to prevent similar errors in the future.
