Shortly after a large crowd of 50,000 individuals protested chanting “ICE out” in Minneapolis, a third fatal shooting by federal agents occurred in a calm residential area.

The incident took place around 9 am US time (2 pm UK time) today, and when I reached the location at 10:20 am, a significant number of local residents had gathered near the yellow tape perimeter. The atmosphere was tense with loud cries echoing through the street.

Amidst the crowd, one woman repeatedly shouted, “What have you done, what have you done?” Within minutes of my arrival at the corner of 27th Avenue and Nicollet Street, the presence of ICE agents within the restricted area had notably increased. They seemed to multiply rapidly, appearing almost out of thin air.

On the opposite side of the yellow tape, hundreds of people confronted the agents with insults, derogatory remarks, and demands for them to leave Minnesota. A bystander likened the scene to the unsettling movie “The Purge,” while a companion noted the heightened tension due to one side being armed.

Shortly before the arrival of emergency services, the man who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest was taken away, despite resuscitation efforts proving futile. As time passed, reports confirmed his tragic demise.

The news of the man’s death rapidly spread among the onlookers, fueling a surge of anger and agitation. Chants grew louder, and the atmosphere became increasingly charged. An incident ensued where an individual was pursued by an ICE agent down the street, prompting cheers from the crowd as the agent struggled to catch up.

In a fleeting moment of jubilation, the situation took a distressing turn. A protester hurled a snowball at the group of ICE agents, triggering a swift response as tear-gas canisters were launched into the crowd of unarmed bystanders.

Thick clouds of white smoke enveloped the vicinity, prompting a chaotic retreat as hundreds of individuals scattered in various directions. Amid the chaos, the detonations grew louder and closer, hinting at the canisters being aimed towards the fleeing crowd.

A voice in the crowd urged others to shield their faces, while calls to clear the streets rang out. The explosive sound of the canisters added to the panic, momentarily sparking fears that gunfire had erupted in the densely packed area.

Under the current tense circumstances, the idea of such violence seemed momentarily plausible. The hostility emanating from the federal agents contrasted starkly with the fear gripping the unarmed bystanders.

Amidst the chaos, a sense of solidarity emerged within the crowd. Despite fleeing from the chemical agents, the individuals continued to watch out for one another.

As I struggled to navigate a snow bank, a stranger helped me up, urging me to keep moving amidst the stampede of people just behind. This resilient spirit seems to resonate across all Minnesotans, united in their determination
