Mongolia’s Former Culture and Tourism Minister, Nomin Chinbat, faced the challenge of promoting a little-known country to tourists. A global survey revealed that only 10% of people recognized Mongolia as a country, with many mistaking it for part of China. This lack of awareness hindered the government’s efforts to boost tourism and diversify the economy away from mining.

Moreover, Mongolia’s reputation for extreme cold and high pollution levels posed additional obstacles. The capital, Ulaanbaatar, is known as the coldest city globally, with temperatures dropping below -20°C in winter. The prevalent use of coal fires for heating has led to severe air pollution, causing thousands of deaths annually.

Despite these challenges, Nomin aimed to reshape perceptions of Mongolia, highlighting its rich history beyond Genghis Khan’s warrior image. The government focused on promoting contemporary cultural aspects, such as The Hu band, blending traditional Mongolian elements with modern music styles.

Nomads, a significant part of Mongolia’s heritage, continue their centuries-old lifestyle of herding livestock on the vast steppe. Approximately 40% of Mongolians are nomadic, living in portable dwellings known as “gers.” The country’s open landscapes, including the Altai Mountains and Gobi Desert, attract visitors seeking adventure and tranquility.

Mongolia has seen a rise in tourism, with a 16% increase in visitors from 2024 to 2025. Efforts to boost tourism include partnerships with international entities like Fulham FC, participation in global events, and improved air connections. Despite challenges like limited flight options and higher travel costs, Mongolia aims to attract 2 million tourists by 2030.

The country’s soft power has grown, with more global recognition and positive perceptions. Nomin expressed confidence in Mongolia’s tourism potential, emphasizing sustainable growth and a promising future in the industry.
