A former geography teacher, Anthony Redmond, 54, residing on Fort Austin Avenue in Plymouth, has been convicted of engaging in sexual activity with two underage pupils, including an incident that took place in a school cupboard. The trial, held at Plymouth Crown Court following a police investigation, focused on incidents that occurred in the 2000s when Redmond was teaching at a school in Plymouth.
Redmond faced charges including five counts of abusing his position of trust by engaging in sexual activities with one girl under 18, two counts with a second girl, and one count of indecency with a child. The offenses occurred at various locations such as his residence, school premises, and a hotel, with one incident specifically mentioned to have taken place in a school cupboard.
During the trial, one of Redmond’s victims testified, expressing feelings of being “used and worthless” by the teacher. It was revealed that Redmond had taken the virginity of both victims. Despite denying the charges, the jury unanimously found Redmond guilty of all offenses. Following the verdict, Redmond’s legal representative, Ali Rafiti, requested a pre-sentence report, highlighting Redmond’s previous good character.
Judge Robert Linford approved the request for the report and granted Redmond bail until his sentencing scheduled for February 10. The judge commended the jury for their dedication, acknowledging their commitment to the trial even after the holiday break. He assured the jury members that if they were called to serve on a jury again within the next decade, they could be excused if they wished.
