A French judge at the Winter Olympics is facing accusations of manipulating the figure skating results to ensure a gold medal for her country. In the ice dance competition, France’s Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron secured the top spot with a total score of 225.82, narrowly edging out Team USA’s Madison Chock and Evan Bates by only 1.43 points.
The controversy arose when the scores of the French judge, Jezabel Dabouis, were revealed online. Despite Chock and Bates being the favorites after winning three consecutive world championships in the event, the judges’ decisions sparked debate.
Following the rhythm dance segment, Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron were placed first, with Chock and Bates settling for second. Notably, there was a significant difference in scores among the judges, with Dabouis awarding her compatriots a substantial 5.74-point advantage over the American duo.
During the free dance, Chock and Bates received the highest scores from five out of the nine judges. However, Dabouis notably rated Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron’s routine a remarkable 7.71 points higher, further fueling the controversy.
The International Skating Union responded to the backlash, emphasizing that variations in scores among judges are normal and that mechanisms are in place to address such discrepancies. They expressed confidence in the fairness of the scores provided.
In light of the situation, Chock and Bates shared their perspectives, acknowledging the emotional rollercoaster they experienced and highlighting their pride in delivering strong performances throughout the competition. Bates reflected on the subjective nature of the sport and the unpredictability of outcomes.
