A recent cyberattack on French supermarkets caused significant damage by spoiling food in hundreds of fridges, highlighting the vulnerabilities of internet-connected systems and devices, say cybersecurity experts. The attack targeted centralized control systems that allow remote temperature adjustments for fridges, leading to spoilage and potential fire hazards.

The Paris prosecutor’s office is investigating the cybercrime incident to determine the extent of the damage and identify the perpetrators. No group has claimed responsibility or made any ransom demands yet. The attack exploited vulnerabilities in the remote monitoring systems of fridges, manufactured by companies like Danfoss, Copeland, and Dixell.

Experts point out that outdated firmware and lack of security updates in these systems made them susceptible to hacking. A report by Claroty highlighted a vulnerability in Danfoss’s firmware that allowed unauthorized access for making remote changes. Implementing security updates promptly is crucial to prevent such incidents.

This incident underscores the broader risk of cyberattacks on the food distribution system. Similar attacks have previously targeted major food suppliers like JBS and United Natural Foods, Inc. As digitization increases in the food industry, the potential for cyber threats grows, necessitating enhanced cybersecurity measures and rapid response protocols.

The incident serves as a reminder that any internet-connected device, whether commercial or residential, can be vulnerable to cyber threats. Devices like smart appliances, thermostats, and fridges are at risk, emphasizing the importance of ensuring robust security measures and prompt updates to mitigate potential risks.
