Ladan Jahankha finds pure joy in being part of her local running community in St. John’s, as it represents the realization of her long-held aspirations. Having previously resided in Iran, where women face significant limitations in sports participation, Jahankha appreciates the newfound freedom and opportunities she enjoys in Canada.

In Iran, female athletes are subjected to stringent dress codes and are often barred from various sporting events, as highlighted by the Center for Human Rights in Iran. Recent reports, such as those from the BBC, have also shed light on the oppressive measures imposed on women participating in activities like marathons in Iran.

Jahankha shared with CBC News that she had attempted to pursue running in her 20s while living in Tehran but was hindered by the prevailing circumstances. However, since relocating to St. John’s and connecting with fellow runners through social media, she has reignited her passion for the sport. With the support of a coach and a welcoming running group, Jahankha has found solace and a sense of community in her newfound running pursuits.

Despite ongoing tensions stemming from the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha has found running to be a source of solace, helping her alleviate stress and anxiety. She expressed gratitude towards Canada for providing her with opportunities that were previously inaccessible due to restrictions in her home country. Jahankha recently took part in a Pride race alongside her family and has set her sights on another 5-kilometer race scheduled for August 16, embracing running as an integral part of her life in her newfound freedom.

By integrating running into her routine, Jahankha has not only found a way to stay active but has also discovered a sense of empowerment and liberation in pursuing her passion for the sport.
