A major financial supporter of the Labour Party has called on the government to promptly address the issue of cutting energy bills.

Dale Vince, an influential figure in the green industry and the founder of Ecotricity, has put forward a proposal for three straightforward actions that could significantly reduce costs, curb inflation, and stimulate economic growth simultaneously.

One of the key recommendations is to sever the connection between the expense of renewable energy and the internationally traded price of gas. Vince asserts that this move alone could have resulted in savings exceeding £43 billion over the past five years.

In a proactive move, he has reached out to all members of parliament and released a special newspaper edition to emphasize his message.

This initiative follows the recent announcement by the regulatory body Ofgem that the price cap for millions of households will increase to an average of £1,758 per year starting from January.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is anticipated to provide assistance with energy bills in the upcoming Budget, with one potential solution being the removal of VAT from energy bills, translating to an average annual saving of around £84 per customer.

While supporting the VAT removal idea, Vince suggests offsetting the revenue loss by imposing VAT on flights. He argues that half of the British population does not fly in a given year, with the wealthiest 10% accounting for half of all flights taken.

According to Vince, his proposed three-point strategy has the potential to reduce energy bills by approximately £20 billion annually over a five-year span.

In addition to addressing the link with wholesale gas prices, he also recommends tightening regulations on the dominant energy network companies, many of which are foreign-owned and reported to enjoy an average profit margin of 40%.

In a more contentious move, Vince proposes providing price stability for North Sea producers, despite the ongoing criticism of fossil fuel companies for their perceived contribution to the climate crisis.

Vince expressed optimism about the economic benefits that could be achieved, emphasizing the need to rectify a system that unfairly burdens households and undermines the British economy. He has circulated his proposals to all Members of Parliament and Peers, underscoring the potential for substantial positive change.

In a special edition, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey condemned the current situation where many families face difficult choices between heating and food, while elderly individuals endure cold homes due to financial constraints.

Davey criticized the prevailing narrative that attributes the crisis to global factors, asserting that the root cause lies in a malfunctioning energy market and governmental policy failures.

He refuted the claims made by Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, stating that the issue does not stem from investments in renewable energy but rather from the lack of cost reductions being passed on to consumers.

Davey highlighted the paradox of electricity prices being tied to expensive fuel like gas, despite the increasing availability of affordable and clean electricity sources. He emphasized the need to decouple electricity costs from volatile gas markets to ensure fairness, enhance energy security, and maintain public support for sustainable energy solutions.
