An American hunter narrowly escaped death during a grizzly bear attack thanks to a split-second decision that saved his life. Chase Dellwo, 26 at the time, was hunting with his brother in the remote Montana wilderness when he unexpectedly encountered a 400-pound sleeping male grizzly.
Reports indicate that Dellwo was moving along a creek bed on a Saturday morning, attempting to drive a group of elk towards his brother’s position on a ridge, when the bear suddenly woke up just three feet away. Inclement weather conditions, such as snow, rain, and strong winds up to 40mph, likely masked Dellwo’s approach, catching the bear off guard.
The bear swiftly attacked Dellwo, knocking him down and biting his head. Despite the intense struggle, Dellwo managed to remember advice from an old article about large animals having a weak gag reflex. In a daring move, he thrust his arm down the bear’s throat, causing the bear to release him and flee.
Injured but alive, Dellwo reunited with his brother who rushed him to the hospital. Doctors treated him for severe injuries including head stitches, a swollen eye, and deep leg puncture wounds. Despite the ordeal, Dellwo expressed understanding towards the bear, emphasizing that it was not the animal’s fault and that it was a frightening experience for both parties.
Social media users praised Dellwo’s quick thinking and courage in the face of danger, acknowledging the remarkable survival story. One Reddit user highlighted Dellwo’s humility and bravery, while another recognized his gratitude for being alive.
