A man who is a husband and father of one is facing allegations of killing his wife and a stranger at their residence a year after engaging in an extramarital affair with the family’s au pair.

Brendan Banfield, aged 39, has been formally charged with aggravated murder in connection to the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, aged 37, and Joseph Ryan, aged 38, at their home in northern Virginia, United States. The tragic incident involved stabbing and gunshot wounds resulting in the fatalities. Banfield was romantically involved with Juliana Peres Magalhaes, a 25-year-old au pair from Brazil, who was living with the Banfield family at the time of the killings.

According to court records, prosecutors have accused Banfield and Magalhaes of orchestrating a complex plan to commit a double murder with the intention of framing another man for the stabbing death of Banfield’s wife.

Evidence suggests that Banfield and Magalhaes were present with the victims on the day of the killings in the primary bedroom of the Banfield residence. Initial reports indicated that Banfield and Magalhaes claimed to have witnessed Ryan, a stranger to them, attacking Banfield’s wife before they intervened by shooting Ryan in self-defense.

Contrary to their version of events, prosecutors argue that Banfield and Magalhaes deliberately lured Ryan to the house and staged the incident to make it appear as though they had acted in defense against an intruder.

It was revealed that both Banfield and Magalhaes had engaged in a romantic relationship starting a year before the tragic events unfolded. Subsequently, both individuals were arrested between 2023 and 2024 and faced murder charges in connection to the case. In 2024, Magalhaes pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter after providing a statement to authorities that corroborated aspects of the prosecution’s case.

Magalhaes admitted in her statement that she and Brendan Banfield had created a social media account in his wife’s name, through which Ryan connected with Christine Banfield. Plans were made for a meeting on the day of the incident involving a sexual encounter that included the use of a knife, as per information obtained from Magalhaes. This statement proved crucial in reinforcing the state’s legal strategy leading up to the trial.

Defense expert witnesses and legal representatives have expressed differing opinions on the case. A former digital forensic examiner testified that Christine Banfield had initiated contact with Ryan through the social media platform, contradicting the prosecution’s narrative. However, this testimony has been subject to review and affirmation by an evidence analysis team at the University of Alabama.

In response to the evolving case dynamics, Banfield’s attorney has raised concerns about the handling of evidence and the investigative process. Allegations of a flawed theory and investigative bias have been asserted by the defense, challenging the prosecution’s narrative of events.

In addition to the murder charges, Banfield is also facing accusations of child abuse and felony child cruelty related to the case, which he denies. These additional charges will be addressed alongside the aggravated murder allegations during the upcoming trial proceedings.
