Iran has issued a caution that the United States and Israel could be considered “legitimate targets” if President Donald Trump decides to attack the Islamic Republic, intensifying concerns of a potential global conflict. Nationwide demonstrations against Iran’s ruling theocracy have entered their second week, with protesters flooding the streets of the capital city and the country’s second-largest urban center. Reports from activists indicate that the ongoing unrest has led to at least 116 fatalities.

As internet access remains blocked in Iran and communication lines are cut, gaining reliable information from outside the country has become increasingly difficult. Nevertheless, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has revealed that the death toll is mounting, with approximately 2,600 individuals detained.

In response to Trump’s previous threats, Iran’s parliament speaker has issued a warning that the US military and Israel could be targeted if the US launches an attack on Iran. The declaration was made by Qalibaf amidst chants of “Death to America!” from Iranian lawmakers in parliament.

There are apprehensions internationally that the information blackout in Iran might embolden the country’s security hardliners to initiate a harsh crackdown, despite Trump’s assurances that he is prepared to intervene to protect peaceful demonstrators.

Trump has expressed solidarity with the protesters on social media, stating that “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!” Reports from The New York Times and Wall Street Journal suggest that Trump has been presented with military options for a potential strike on Iran, although no final decision has been made.

The State Department has issued a stern warning, emphasizing the seriousness of Trump’s statements and intentions.

During a live broadcast of the parliament session on Iranian state television, Qalibaf, a conservative figure and former presidential candidate, praised the police and Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, particularly the volunteer Basij force, for their resilience during the protests. He also issued a direct threat towards Israel and the US military, hinting at a preemptive strike.

While there is speculation about Iran’s intentions regarding an attack, especially after its air defenses were compromised in a previous conflict with Israel, the decision to engage in warfare ultimately rests with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The US military has confirmed its readiness with forces deployed across the Middle East to defend against any threats to its interests and allies in the region.

Recent footage from Iran, possibly transmitted through Starlink satellite technology, captured protesters gathering in different locations, including Tehran. The protests have taken various forms to adapt to the heavy security presence and pressure.

In Mashhad, clashes between demonstrators and security forces have been captured on video, underscoring the significance of the city as a religious center in Shiite Islam. Similar demonstrations have been reported in other cities like Kerman.

Iranian state broadcasters have showcased peaceful areas on screen, while also airing pro-regime rallies in different cities. Khamenei has hinted at an imminent crackdown against protestors, disregarding warnings from the US.

Amidst the unrest, Iran’s exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi has called for mass demonstrations, urging supporters to display patriotic emblems from Iran’s pre-revolution era. The protests began due to economic challenges and have now evolved into direct challenges against Iran’s religious leadership.
