The Israeli government has issued a warning to Hamas, stating that if action is not taken to prevent kites flown by Palestinians, including children, from reaching Israel, there will be an escalation of “targeted strikes” on Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with Defence Minister Israel Katz, conducted a “situational assessment” on Sunday to address the ongoing threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza towards Israel. Netanyahu emphasized that unless the launches cease immediately, the IDF will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible and evacuate the population from areas used as launch sites.
Netanyahu affirmed that Israel will not tolerate threats from Hamas or any other group in Gaza that jeopardize the safety of Israeli communities. The recent actions come in response to incidents where kites and balloons sent from Gaza caused fires and damage in Israel.
In reaction to Netanyahu’s warnings, 13-year-old Omar Halawa expressed that flying kites by the shore in Khan Younis brings joy amid the conflict. He emphasized that they are only children seeking happiness and have no association with Hamas.
Recent Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including two children, in various locations in Gaza, following the previous conflict initiated by Hamas. The ongoing violence has led to numerous deaths and injuries on both sides, with the situation escalating tensions between Israel and Gaza.
Hamas condemned Netanyahu’s statements and accused Israel of committing atrocities against Palestinians, calling for international intervention to enforce a genuine ceasefire in Gaza. Concerns about the impact on children’s activities due to security threats have been raised by local residents, highlighting the ongoing struggle for normalcy in the region.
The children, despite the risks, continued flying their kites near their tents as the day drew to a close, symbolizing their resilience amidst the turmoil.
