In recent days, a series of Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, as reported by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the deadliest attack following a fragile ceasefire agreement reached in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, despite ongoing attacks.
Apart from aerial bombings and drone assaults, local residents and emergency responders in the area have accused Israeli forces of deliberately igniting wildfires that have ravaged homes, forests, and olive groves in the conflict-ridden region. This situation has instilled fear among the populace regarding their ability to remain in the area and the prospects of the hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict ever being able to return.
Will Christou, a journalist affiliated with The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been actively covering the wildfires and the broader Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.
