Jessica Pegula, known for her significant wealth in the tennis world, has indicated that Andy Murray might have taken on the role of Novak Djokovic’s coach out of curiosity. Shortly after retiring from professional tennis in the summer of 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
The collaboration between the two tennis legends began before the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals but later withdrew due to injury. It was later revealed in May that their coaching partnership had ended by mutual agreement, just six months after they joined forces.
During an episode of The Players Box podcast with Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, with a net worth of nearly £15 million and set to inherit a £5.5 billion fortune, suggested that Murray might have been intrigued by the opportunity to gain insights into Djokovic’s mindset.
Pegula remarked, “I think he was so interested. I think he thought, ‘This is so strange, I’m so curious. Why do you want me to coach you but I’m also so interested in how your brain works and how you’re thinking out there’. And I definitely saw them out there.”
Keys also shared the view that Murray’s collaboration with Djokovic was uncommon, supporting Pegula’s belief that Murray sought to understand what makes Djokovic a formidable competitor.
Despite their coaching relationship ending, both Murray and Djokovic have discussed their reasons for parting ways. Murray, in an interview with The Times in June, revealed that he saw coaching Djokovic as a unique opportunity and wanted to explore whether he would enjoy the role.
Djokovic, on his part, expressed that they had mutually agreed to end their partnership as they felt they had reached their limit in terms of on-court results. He emphasized the valuable insights he gained from Murray and praised his tennis acumen, although their collaboration did not yield the anticipated outcomes.
