Tributes are being honored for a young jump jockey who tragically passed away following a stroke while riding. Pierre-Alfred Grondin, a 23-year-old jockey from Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, had moved to France a decade ago to pursue a career in horse racing.
Reports from France indicate that Grondin experienced a cardio-neurovascular incident while riding at Maisons-Laffitte, just days before his 24th birthday.
Grondin, who had no prior experience in horse riding when he came to mainland France at 14, enrolled in Afasec, an organization that trains individuals for roles in the horse racing sector. Initially under Fabrice Chappet in Chantilly, he later joined Jehan Bertran de Balanda at Maisons-Laffitte.
In 2021, Grondin achieved his first victory at Auteuil under Balanda’s guidance and accumulated a total of eight wins in his career, with his most recent triumph at Compiegne in March 2024. His racing activity in 2025 had seen him compete in ten races.
Balanda, reflecting on their time together, expressed deep sorrow over Grondin’s untimely passing, highlighting his passion for horses, strong work ethic, and dedication.
A moment of silence was observed at Dieppe racecourse on Saturday before the commencement of the races, with jockeys wearing black armbands in remembrance of Grondin. Gabin Meunier, a close friend of Grondin, dedicated his recent victory to the late jockey.
Numerous heartfelt tributes flooded social media platforms, including a touching message recounting Grondin’s journey from Reunion Island to France, praising his determination and acknowledging his family’s loss.
