Keir Starmer has criticized the violence against demonstrators in Iran and called on Tehran to show restraint in response to ongoing protests against the ruling regime. Reports indicate that at least 62 people have been killed and 2,300 individuals detained during weeks of protests triggered by economic hardships in the country.

In a joint statement with the leaders of France and Germany, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the reported violence by Iranian security forces and strongly condemned the killing of protesters. The leaders emphasized the importance of the Iranian authorities protecting their population and respecting the rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of retaliation.

The recent wave of unrest began with small-scale protests related to economic issues but has escalated into a significant challenge to the government. Nationwide demonstrations were sparked after the exiled Crown Prince called for action, leading to mass gatherings and anti-regime chants. The response from authorities has been severe, with internet blackout and a promised crackdown resulting in thousands of detentions and numerous deaths.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the protesters of seeking favor from the US President, dismissing Trump’s statements and escalating tensions. The Iranian government has labeled the demonstrators as “terrorists,” setting the stage for a harsh crackdown reminiscent of past responses to protests.

Calls have been renewed for the UK government to designate the ruling IRGC as a terrorist organization, aligning with actions taken by other countries. Experts emphasize the need for global support for the Iranian people in their quest for a free and democratic republic, urging democratic governments to take concrete steps beyond issuing statements of concern.

The situation in Iran has drawn attention to the repressive nature of the state and prompted discussions on international actions against the regime.
