“Labour Chancellor Lifts Child Support Cap, Aims to End Poverty”

I firmly believe that each newborn in our nation should have an equal opportunity to establish a prosperous life, including access to quality education, a suitable dwelling, and regular meals.

My commitment to fostering a more just and robust society led to the decision, during the previous fiscal year’s Budget, to eliminate the restriction on the number of children supported.

The prior administration’s imposition of this restriction deprived hundreds of thousands of children of essential necessities like food, warmth, and clothing, exacerbating financial difficulties for many families and intensifying the struggles of households already facing economic hardship. This policy also introduced a controversial provision known as the “rape clause” into our welfare system.

As the Labour Chancellor, I take pride in lifting the cap and, in conjunction with initiatives such as free breakfast clubs and school meals for children of Universal Credit recipients, we aim to uplift over 500,000 children out of poverty by 2030.

These half a million children will have a brighter start in life, free from the anxieties, uncertainties, and adverse effects of poverty. Recently, I had the privilege of meeting some of these children and advocates for women’s rights at Downing Street.

Their stories of perseverance in the face of prolonged hardships resonated with me. The courage and inspiration displayed by the parents and young individuals I encountered that day will forever stay with me.

Today, Parliament will vote on measures to support these families, marking a significant milestone in dismantling an unjust policy that has inflicted harm for far too long. While my stance on this matter is clear, the Conservatives and Reform parties must clarify their positions.

However, our efforts cannot conclude here. We must continue striving to create a society where every child is afforded an equitable start in life and every parent is treated with respect, dignity, and the necessary assistance. This is the essence of my political and governmental involvement and remains my unwavering commitment.
