A murderer will spend the remainder of his life in prison for killing his estranged wife and desecrating her body. Zarbab Ali, aged 29, received a life sentence with no chance of parole following the tragic demise of Rachael Castillo, aged 25. Rachael, a mother of two children shared with Ali, had initiated divorce proceedings. The incident occurred when Ali ambushed her at her sister’s residence, where she and her sons were residing, shortly before their divorce was to be finalized.
Ali had dropped off Rachael’s children at his parents’ home and returned to the apartment where Rachael was alone. He entered the apartment through an unlocked door, turned off the lights, and attacked Rachael in a dim hallway, inflicting 11 stab wounds on her neck and chest, according to the Ventura County District Attorney.
After the brutal attack, Ali wrapped Rachael’s body in a blanket, attempted to clean the scene, and then transported her in his car, which he had deliberately left open. He buried her in Littlerock, California, using a shovel he had recently purchased. Upon his return to his parents’ residence, Rachael’s sister discovered evidence of a violent altercation and alerted the authorities. Despite Rachael’s disappearance, her personal effects were found at the scene, leading to a police investigation that revealed Ali’s presence in the vicinity.
In the early hours of the next day, Ali revisited the burial site, unearthed Rachael’s body, sexually assaulted her remains, and reburied her. Subsequently, police discovered Rachael’s remains in a remote desert location near Littlerock on November 13, 2022, leading to Ali’s arrest on the same day. Ali pleaded guilty to various charges, including unlawful mutilation, disinterment, and sexual contact with human remains, in addition to the murder charge.
During the sentencing, Rachael’s family delivered emotional victim impact statements, portraying Rachael as more than just a victim but as a caring mother, sister, daughter, and friend with aspirations for her future and her children. Addressing Ali directly, the speakers condemned his actions as cowardly, emphasizing the irreversible impact on Rachael’s children. The court proceedings shed light on the tragic loss of a promising life and the devastation caused by the heinous crime committed by the defendant.
